Paul smith – new masters

New Masters Explore the new print series for autumn/winter ’19 that celebrates the clash of patterns, colours and artistic styles that occurs on Paul’s bookshelves. As with so many Paul Smith prints in the past, the origins of the New Masters series can be traced back to Paul’s London office. While searching for inspiration through his heavily laden and creaking bookshelves, Paul was intrigued by the way a vintage copy of The Face might sit next to a book of Old Masters paintings. This unexpected and irreverent clash of styles sparked Paul’s imagination and the seeds of the New Masters series were planted. The series makes use of regular Paul Smith print elements – floral motifs, graphic typography, bold colour and leopard spots – but it’s the way that these familiar forms are brought together and blended that makes the New Masters prints unique. Hidden within classic floral still life arrangements you will find bold digital text. Animal prints are presented in vibrant colours that disconnect the pattern from the natural world. An oversized face icon appears in bright blue, partly in tribute to the large format of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. A sense of modernity comes from the fabric choice. As well as being printed on classic cotton and wool, the prints also appear on a range of other bases – from technical outerwear fabrics and swim short material that is made using recycled nylon to lightweight flowing satin. The New Masters print series is available now for men and women in Paul Smith shops and online. Find unique clothes, shoes and leather accessories from the collection via the links below.
